Justice M. N. Venkatachaliah Former Chief Justice of India and Chairman, Institute Of Directors
I have pleasure in inviting you to the 18th World Congress on Environment Management being organized on 8-9 July, 2016, in New Delhi, with the Theme : 'Environment and Climate Change – Transitioning to a Sustainable Economy”.
Two significant events that will impact the future course of global development have taken place during 2015. The first was the UN 'Sustainable Development Goals' and the 'Agenda 2030' and the second was the ‘Paris Climate Change Agreement’ (COP 21). The Agreement has been ratified on 22 April 2016 in New York. India played an important role in both these agreements, and is committed to the targets. A major element in these agreements is the role of business and industry as partners with Govts.
20 century was marked by both, the recognition and creation of a host of st environmental problems. The 21 Century now bears the burden of resolving these problems, and preventing the emergence of more. Disaster management failed, showing gaping holes and inadequate relief and rescue, in the 2013's Tsunami, recent floods and the spate of earthquakes all over the world.
Green is the most relevent word today. ‘Going green’ has assumed a whole new meaning, with corporates adopting green economy and using social media, to reach out to their consumers. It would be essential, to consider options that would make growth more inclusive and sustainable - in other words, a green economy.
The conservation of Nature and protection of our environment is a collective task, involving citizens and government, the corporate sector and all other stakeholders in our complex and diverse society. Today, we face unprecedented environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and resource scarcity.
IOD looks forward to welcoming your participation in this collective solution oriented Sustainability effort.
